Sustainability In Vietnam’s Livestock Industry

Vietnam's livestock industry is experiencing a significant growth, becoming a vital pillar of the agricultural sector. With an annual growth rate of 5-7%, the livestock industry significantly contributes to the economic value of agriculture.

However, with the unpredictability of climate change and the depletion of resources, maintaining traditional livestock farming models poses numerous challenges. The transition to green livestock farming has become an inevitable trend. This shift enhances production efficiency and product quality and addresses the growing development needs of the sector.

Transforming agriculture into a high-tech and sustainable industry requires substantial investment in research and the application of advanced science and technology. Breakthroughs in biosecurity, genetic technology, and modern livestock farming methods, such as circular farming systems, waste recycling, and greenhouse gas reduction, are creating significant opportunities for Vietnam to move faster towards sustainability.

Enhancing international cooperation and technology transfer

The government has outlined clear objectives and directions in Decision 1520/QĐ-TTg regarding the "Animal husbandry development strategy in 2021 – 2030 and vision for 2045" to promote the industry towards a green, clean, and sustainable path. One of the top priorities is strengthening international cooperation and technology transfer to access advanced scientific and technological achievements.

In recent years, organisations in Vietnam's livestock industry have continuously promoted cooperative programs and projects with international organisations and businesses. The livestock industry in Vietnam has gained significant scientific and technological advancements and attracted skilled talents, aligning with the sustainable livestock development orientation of the government.

According to the Foreign Investment Agency, total FDI in Vietnam’s livestock sector has reached $2.2 billion, with 81 projects covering the entire livestock value chain, from breeding and animal feed to product processing. Although the number of FDI businesses is modest, their production scale is significant. For example, for animal feed production, FDI businesses make up only 25.7% of the total but hold nearly 60% of the market's production.

With this robust influx of investment and cooperation, Vietnam's livestock industry is steadily approaching global standards. Advanced livestock chains are being formed, giving local businesses access to cutting-edge technologies and modern equipments. This not only boosts production efficiency but also elevates product quality, enabling them to meet the rigorous standards of international markets.

To fully leverage its potential, Vietnam's livestock industry requires close coordination among all stakeholders. Cooperation between the government, relevant organisations, businesses, and farmers is essential to accelerate scientific and technological progress and facilitate an attractive production and business environment.

Vietnam's livestock industry is currently at a critical juncture, encountering both opportunities and challenges. The transition to a sustainable livestock model is not only an urgent necessity but also the only path toward long-term development. With appropriate investments and robust international cooperation, the livestock industry has the potential to achieve significant success, thereby enhancing the nation's standing on the global stage.
